WE'VE MOVED! See our new blog page HERE!
April 16, 2009
Jim Ferguson/Jon Golden/Dan Gosch/Bob Karambelas, Rob Jaczko, Ron Labbe, host with Jeff Bukhman and KITTY KOENIG, guests April seems like an odd month to pick BIKINI as the theme, but our special guest was first seen in a bikini via Richard Hartweg's 1970 stereo slides I won on eBay months ago! I sold off some of the "extras" on eBay, and some weeks ago I was contacted by Kitty Koenig, the First Place winner of the Chicago Bikini Contest! Now living in CT, she was excited to come and see herself 39 years ago in 3D! She brought several slide pages of 2D images from her modelling career which we projected on the big screen. Up in the balcony I had setup the DepthQ 720P 3D projector with a number of shutter glasses for 3D viewing of a short "moving" slide show I did with scanned 3D slides from the Chicago contest. We sat down and looked at some of the print material she brought... she was a Playboy bunny for years and lived at the Hefner mansion for a time. Stereo slides were passed around, it seemed like all at once! Our other new guest, Jeff Bukhman, brought some large lenticular images of flowers and even a portrait, consisting of 30 images each! I decided to take some 3Dphotos with my great new SDM pair of Canon SD870 cameras... after all, this is a group about 3D images! Who wants to read all this text?? Decided to try Masuji SUTO's Stereo Viewer Applet (since I used his amazing SPM to align/crop the digital pairs) to display the 3D shots. It uses a JAVA applet, let me know what you think!

Jon Golden/Dan Gosch/Ron Labbe, host with Bob Karambelas and Rob Jaczko, guests Bob continues to bring strong 3D images, is buying new 3D camera gear, and is probably soon to be a core group member! Late theme was CREATURES, mainly because I had an incredibly well-done (and funny!) 3D video from Hungary called "Club Hungaricum". We also saw some "making of Wanderlust" digital slides by Greg Dinkins as well as Santiago Caicedo's "Moving Still". Upstairs we saw another round of great slides, including some of Rob's first "cha-cha" hypers of his amazing home. My "creatures" were all vintage slides, but Jon and Dan had some modern slides to share.

Jim Ferguson/Jon Golden/Dan Gosch/Ron Labbe, host with Bob Karambelas, Rob Jaczko, Eric Goldstein and Jic Davis, guests Full house this month! Started with projections in the sanctuary, featuring Bjork's "Wanderlust" and my "Day and Night" which included 3D clips of Lux Interior (Erick Purkhiser) of the CRAMPS who passed away recently. I was personally shocked that he was gone, we had been exchanging slides for years and I'd just emailed him about an eBay auction he beat me on... he was also a major collector, and I was really hoping he'd make it to a Third Thursday meeting. Shocking, and sad... Rob Jaczko (Chairman of Music Production at Berklee School of Music) was interested in equipment used to shoot the videos... he wants to put together a righ tobring to Africa! Up in the balcony the theme was "Religion", religious wedding vintage slides, bar mitzvahs and nuns were viewed. Jon came up with some beauties, I had a few... Dan brought some of his images we'd not seen before and Jim brought some fun family and friends shots. Dan lamented that Abe Lincoln was never shot in 3D~ I came up with 2 stereo pairs very quickly!

Jim Ferguson/Jon Golden/Dan Gosch/Ron Labbe, host with Bob Karambelas, guest Our guest this month is an old acquaintance of Dan's who used to own a hobby shop... he brought a tray of 2x2 pairs he'd shot in the 80's... We were talking about the recent NFL 3D theater simulcast and Bob shows us some fun football hypers. When Jon arrived, Bob happens to pull out some great shots of trains: model shots that looked real, and real shots that looked like models! Of course, immediately he and Jon had instant rapport. Jon brought some train slides by the infamous stereo photographer Richard Hartweg, including several shots of the man himself in front of huge locomotives... He also brought some images by the chairman of the New York Times Arthur Sulzberger, including images of Winston Churchill. In the big room I did a dry run of a digital projection program I've been working on for months on and off even though the narration wasn't quite ready! Called "Publishing Stereoscopic Images" it includes many types of examples of published 3D since the late 1800's. I will be presenting this at the Stereoscopic Displays and Applications conference in San Jose on Monday! Finally we dove into a huge box of very early Realist slides that I'd just "won" on eBay, I'd not seen them myself yet. We only looked at a few dozen, but so far a good percentage of keepers!
December 18, 2008
Jim Ferguson/Jon Golden/Ron Labbe, host Too bad Dan couldn't make it (son's play opening night!) as we looked at the images shot at Jim's studio last month. It was really fun and interesting! Instead of the 3 different cameras (basically shooting the same shots of us taking turns posing) being too similar, it was startling how different they were. Jim and I were quite pleased with many of the shots, including a few were possible Golds (one of Jim with wax lips comes to mind!). It was a group effort, for sure. Jon said he enjoyed the shots of us much more than the models we'd threateded to stereograph~ ! He picked out a nice series of "Jon" shots: railroad/time exposure/cha-cha that were great to see. I showed some recent RBT S1 shots from the North End and NYC, as well as a batch of 1970's Playboy bunny shots from Erick Purkhiser I got in a trade. Those were great, but a special treat were a half dozen "freebies" he included- amazing Norman Miller images! Really good ones, at least one Gold! Another late night...
November 20, 2008
Jim Ferguson/Dan Gosch/Ron Labbe, host Very different meeting. We'd decided to do some actual 3D photography at Jim's beautiful studio in Maynard (which he's giving up next month after 13 years!) and arranged for some pretty young women to model for us. Up until yesterday all was a go, but on the very morning of the shoot the model called in sick! Scrambling, Jim got his co-worker Amy to agree, but she backed out with just hours before the meeting! Seems that it was probably a good thing, since we were our own best models! We had Dan's Sputnik, Jim's Realist and my China MF going, taking turns with each other in the hot seat... trying light drawing and painting, plastic noses, ears and lips- it was quite fun! It's a shame we can't make this a regular thing... No pizza, Jim and I had Chinese food down the street. Late night!
October 16, 2008
Jim Ferguson/Jon Golden/Ron Labbe, host with Robin Weiss and Michele Duran, guests Michele will come if it's not a "boy's club"! I showed off a beautiful 16x24 lenticular print of Renoir's "Girls at the Piano" 3D conversion... framed at the new Gallery Seven in town by Nick Johnson, who came to a meeting in Feb '07 with New England School of Photography crew (lives in Maynard! Said he might make it tonight, but...). Peter Sinclair did the lenticular, one of the nicest I've seen. Also had a print pair displayed for viewing with the new "David Lee" print viewer... could be used for gallery stereo exhibition. Had a bunch of large Klutho anaglyph prints (up to 39" wide!) under the big lights which are certainly gallery quality (these were test prints). Also showed the new Chinese made Medium Format lighted viewer! Super sharp large optics, led panel lit by 3 AA's, for $75! I showed more slides from the Alan Lee Studios collection, Jon had great trolly images shot by Richard Hartweg (1960's?) and Big Jim showed some nice Realist slides from his trip to England.
September 18, 2008
Jim Ferguson/Jon Golden/Ron Labbe, host The most interesting thing at this meeting was the 49" autostereoscopic screen on loan from WOW Inc (dba www.the3rddimension.tv) Even though it's pretty impressive 3D without glasses, it's got quite a few drawbacks. Text is not super clear, and there is a "flip" moment as you walk by where the 3D flips from one end to the other, giving a psedo-3D moment. There's also a weird wave, from the (slightly) diagonal lens, I think... Had a laptop screen, too not as impressive, but not bad. Jon handn't seen the new IN YOUR FACE 3D, so he got his first look. I think Jim was the first to see it! Oh, we also looked at some slides (and even some 2D digitals from Jon's vacation).
August 21, 2008
Dan Gosch/Ron Labbe Obviously the theme this month should have been "VACATIONS", since both Jon Golden and Jim Ferguson are away! But Dan made the trek, and was among the first people to see the new "IN YOUR FACE 3-D" book, not scheduled to be released to the public until October (ok, Jim stopped by early in the week and got a copy!). He agreed that it is, as it says on the cover, the "Best 3-D Book Ever!" I also showed a couple of new StereoJets, including one of Jim... at life size his head just fits in an 8x10 frame! Showed the Bjork 3D video I got from Greg Dinkins and some other shows I'd run at NSA. After pizza and checking out the triple LEEP viewer, we looked at some classic 1950's slides from Alan Lee Studio in Boston.
July 17, 2008
Jim Ferguson/Ron Labbe, host with Fred Levy and Jeff "Jeffu" Warmouth, guests So, David Klutho, the famous Sports Illustrated 3D photographer was supposed to be here on Third Thusday. Actually, he WAS here, but he left at 6AM! A photo shoot turned out to be today instead of this weekend. Jon Golden also couldn't make it, and Dan Gosch was on vacation. Fred came with his friend Jeff, since I'd pumped up the excitement of Klutho being here, but at least I was able to show the 2.5 minute 3D promo video for the new book I put together for the recent NSA convention. Showed some slides I got recently on eBay and NSA, Jim showed some new stuff including Brooklyn cemetery, and Jeff had a couple custom View-Master reels he'd made that were quite good! (Made with a kit that Shab Levy concocted... time consuming but worked well. Jeff even inkjet printed the face! )

Jim Ferguson/Dan Gosch/Ron Labbe, host with Paul Light and Susan Hargrave guests
Paul Light is a practicing photographer as well as a photography teacher... he was my roommate for several years in the mid 1970's! We see him and his girlfriend Susan at many openings in the area, so we were pleased to have them visit. Paul had done quite a bit of "light drawing" photography, and luckily Dan brought some of his amazing stereo work- totally blew Paul away. Jim had some new images, mostly of his co-worker Amy Essigmann who is a fantastic model. There was a portrait with a crazy colorful expansion puzzle on her head that was just spectacular. Dan brought me a Crayola "3D" Chalk set, which includes Chromadepth glasses. I've never been a big fan of Chromadepth (except maybe in "haunted houses") but the packaging on this is phenomenal! I showed some A grade vintage people stuff and we looked at images in the rotary viewers in the screening room.
May 15, 2008
Jim Ferguson/Ron Labbe and hundreds of guests
Since the DeCordova Museum was having an opening tonight, I thought it might be fun to meet there... free admission with food and drink~ and art! Dan Gosch ended up not being able to make it, but we ran into a number of people who had attended Third Thursday meetings (though Nick Capasso didn't seem to be there!). I had a case with viewer and slides with me, but I just couldn't bring myself to expose my own art collection~ Most of the art was pretty lame, I thought, except for David Prifti's amazing collodion tintypes! And he's a Maynard guy who intends to come to a meeting! These were portraits, and were just classic and modern at the same time. I was super impressed by his work. Jim mentioned something about PUPU Platter, and Michele got very excited, so we went to China Ruby and looked at a few vintage stereos...
April 16, 2008
Dan Gosch/Jim Ferguson/Jon Golden/Ron Labbe, host
It was great to have all the core guys back for a fun meeting. I had some new eBay scores to share, one was a cache of stereos from the first "Rush St. (Chicago) Bikini Contest" 1970. The photographer, Richard Hartweg, meticulously detailed each slide, and newspaper clippings from the event really reinforced the history of the event. Too bad he wasn't all that good with a camera! But there were some gems... I also had a set of French BW glass slides and viewer called "Mignon-Stereo" (1910?)... mignon means tiny, and this is! Slides are only 2.5 inches wide! Viewing lenses were only 50mm separation (Viewmaster is 65) but there was no problem viewing- other than having to pull the lens housing completely out of the viewer (the focal length was too long, it seems!). Many images were quite beautiful! Jon had a great set of vintage images, including a gold shot of a kid on his new bike, dressed in his cowboy outfit in front of the Christmas tree. People stayed later than usual~!
March 20, 2008
Jon Golden/Ron Labbe with Michele Duran and Robin Weiss
Two core guys couldn't make it, neither a number of potential guests... So, Jon and I invited my wife Michele and his friend Robin to do an "out to dinner" Third Thursday meeting. We went to the local "Blue Coyote" after I told them how amazing the Coconut Encrusted Haddock was. The place was packed, so I asked right off the bat if they had any more... plenty! So Jon and I ordered it. Soon after, of course, we were told there was none to be had. I won't mention that I am on a restricted Lenten diet... In any case, we had plenty of good 3D images- Jon brought a nice stash, some vaguely resembling this month's theme of "Spring"...
February 20, 2008
Jim Ferguson/Jon Golden/Ron Labbe, host with Susan Huszar, guest
With a theme of MUSIC, Jon had a load of images to share (it was his theme idea!) since he's been in the music business as sound engineer and musician. Straight shots along with time exposures incorporating ethereal light effects. I showed some images of myself playing drums for The Waldo-Woodhead Show, mostly from 1988 at the EXPO in Brisbane Australia. Jim had some images of his favorite band "Cracker", and a beautiful MF slide pair of a nude with lute. Our guest Susan is a local artist, who in addtion to being a scuptress (I bought a piece from her at the Maynard Artspace Open Studios... a very strange yet beautiful bone sculpture I call "Boneasaurus") is an accomplished photographer. She brought a beautiful portfolio filled with large black and white prints of kids and animals. Pretty nice for 2D!

Dan Gosch/Jim Ferguson/Jon Golden/Ron Labbe, host with Fred Levy and Jennifer Maestre, guests
We've been doing this now for TWO YEARS! That's pretty amazing... The crazy theme (since we'd been talking about it at the previous meeting) was "Just Say NO to Drugs", and people sure did manage to come up with medicinal images. The bulk of the evening was with Jon's great doggie images, which he brought especially for Fred who is putting together a book of dog photography (met him at the dog park where we take our dog SKY most Sunday mornings). Speaking of which, I showed some of the images from my first rolls of film taken with my NEW Medium Format stereo camera from 3D WORLD in China. The camera is tack sharp, the images spectacular. I shot at Jim's studio and got one gold shot of SKY, and Jim shot some scary tests of me with XRAY spex... I also presented some images I'd shot on my recent trip to Florida of some wild pigs and alligators in the Everglades.

Dan Gosch/Jim Ferguson/Jon Golden/Ron Labbe, host with Robin Weiss, guest
The core group made it to the meeting through nasty winter weather... Jim even left work, having to go back and work all night! He said he'd have to leave at 9:30, but the good times rolled and before he knew it the clock said 11:00! Jon brought his friend Robin, who is a budding photograher who will hopefully be trying some stereo soon~ Jon also brought a box of GOLD: fantastic stereo slides (1950's-70's mostly pin-sharp, beautifully lit Kodachromes) from former View-Master photographer Paul Knaut! Not only was there a bevy of bikini'd beauties, but kids with toy trains around the Christmas tree, stunning scenics, parades and more... I brought a recent eBay auction win (500+ vintage slides from the "Alan Lee" Studio of Boston) that I'd barely looked at... thought it was going to be a real treat until the Knaut slides blew us away! Incredibly, both collections included shots of the famous Cranmore Skimobile Lift!

Jim Ferguson//Ron Labbe, host with Amy Essigmann and Adam Katseff, guests
Three no-shows tonight! Luckily Jim brought a few colleagues from work. Adam's first time here, and his expectations were exceeded! We began with a knockout 6x13cm glass nude I picked up (cheap!) on eBay from France... this is a gold! Followed that with vintage Grade A travel images from Dr. Harold E. Simon, mostly Africa. Jim had some shots from his recent trip to Orlando, and I showed some more NYC Art Parade, and some from my trip through Vermont (to Canada). After Amy and Adam left, I showed Jim shots of my trip with Michele to the Old Mill bed and breakfast near Northampton.

Dan Gosch/Jim Ferguson//Ron Labbe, host with Gwen and Peter Murphy, guests
Having recently purchased a very nice shoe/face sculpture by Gwen Murphy from the Maynard ArtSpace, I invited her to bring it by and experience a Third Thursday. She brought her husband Peter and they got a quick tour of the building before settling in to see 3D... Dan had brought a large pair of colored pencil images (3x3 ft each?) that were a stereo pair of a cigar-smoking bruiser's head smashing through a brick wall. Used my "Nu-View" viewer to see the crossed pair... lots of parallax! I had a load of images that I shot on my recent trip to NYC of an "Art Parade" in Soho. Big Jim surprised us with some older shots that we'd not seen before, that were quite good! Luckily Dan also brought some of his A slides, so Gwen and Peter were able to get a full dose of high grade stereo. I think they were impressed! And the pizza seems to be a keeper...
September 20, 2007
Dan Gosch/Jim Ferguson/Jon Golden/Ron Labbe, host
Three of this evenings participants had recent or upcoming birthday... with Dan turning 60 and Jon 50! But so young at heart! I put out some gifts for the boys and we got pizza... the pizza part may be a keeper! The theme was going to be TRANSPORTATION, but I brought out the BIRTHDAY box instead. Dan, who's missed a few meetings with his dad moving in, valiantly stuck to the original theme even though his slide area has been totally disarrayed. A lot of time was spent looking at the photography books that were presented, by Jan Saudek and Dave LaChappelle. How incredible would many of these images be in stereo?
August 16, 2007
Jim Ferguson/Sara Matias/Ron Labbe Strange coincidence this morning- at the Boston Bean for a rare morning appearance for ice coffee and croissant. First I see Jim over by his studio, he sits with me. Then he sees old friend Sara across the street (her finance Doug has also appeared before Jim!) and she comes over. As Dan and Jon couldn't make it, we decided to meet up at 51 Main for Third Thursday dinner and slides... like old times! We three used to hang out quite a bit when she had a thrift shop right across the street from the Bean. Sara isn't a photographer, other than shooting stuff she sells on eBay, but she is something of an artist, making crafts under the name "Bumpy Bieler". After screwing the lenses all the way in on my RBT Combi viewer, she really enjoyed the 3D! We went back to the balcony where I continued to show an amazing score of slides that "happened" to come with a viewer I got on eBay: a set of about 20 images that featured 1950's "SURE-COLD" refrigeration products... including in-store shots, factory shots, and NUDES in and around the appliances! Also showed some of my own shots... fun evening.
July 19, 2007
Jim Ferguson/Ron Labbe
Just back from NSA/ISU convention in Boise and Big Jim is the only one who makes it! So why not go out and line up a model at the local watering hole while we're looking at slides? Jim has been in contact with Melanie who bartends at the local restaurant, and though she seems excited about being photographed, she's not been responding to his emails. We did get a huge hug (I met her a while back- with Michele) and she apologized for not getting back to Jim on getting together for a shoot. She was blown away by his MF slides, and she had to pass the viewer around to some of the regulars. So now she is really jazzed about posing for him, but will she actually go for it? Time will tell! She is a hot ticket~ not likely to be shy in front of the camera. So we had some food and a few drinks and graded some slides of Disneyland and World's Fairs, including some good ones by Paul Wing.
June 21, 2007
Dan Gosch/Jim Ferguson/Jon Golden/Ron Labbe, host with Vivian Walworth and Amy Essigmann, guests
Jan's gone, but Jim brought in Amy! She works with him at Color Services (print spotter) and does 2D (flat!) photography... She'd seen Jim's stuff and is very interested in stereo. Unfortunately, she usually drives to NYC on Thursday evenings! She seemed to enjoy the images and company, and we liked her... maybe she will work out as a core group member. As this was the longest day of the year, the loose theme was SUMMER... Dan brought some flash freeze shots of his kids in the pool, I had some long exposure stuff from a recent evening party... I also showed some vintage "art" images. Jon brought some great train images by Paul Milligan and some of his own... Jim had some of his medium format slides. Vivian brought in a large reflective StereoJet of a harbor she shot... she'd had a mild heart attack since her last visit 2 months ago! Luckily she's feisty and still working on reviving StereoJet.
May 17, 2007
Dan Gosch/Jan Burandt/Jim Ferguson/Jon Golden/Ron Labbe, host It's hard to believe that this is Jan's last THIRD THURSDAY! We had a little pizza party before the "meeting", Jon brought the pies. Jan reports that the show she has of the then 8x10 rear-lit StereoJets she had me make for her of her art car stereos in the Houston Art Car Museum was really well received. I showed one of the images that didn't make it since I printed it pseudo by mistake. I gave Jan some stereocards I printed out of the core group portraits I'd shot with the P200's last meeting... My wife Michele joined in for a good part of the meeting. The official theme was PARTY, but I never had time to dig out my party pix! So I showed some very wacky photo club model shots from the 80's... Jon had some nice BW stereocards that a friend of his made, who may come to the next meeting. He showed them in a wild plexiglas viewer made by Shab Levy... longest focal length lenses I'd ever seen! Dan came up with some party shots, including interesting double exposures. It was a great night with a lot of laughs... we're really going to miss Jan!
April 17, 2007
Dan Gosch/Jan Burandt/Jim Ferguson/Jon Golden/Ron Labbe, host with Vivian Walworth, guest
Dan was the only one who hadn't heard until tonight that Jan has accepted a job (paper conservator) at the MENIL Art Museum in Houston- meaning that our veteran and lone female core group member will soon be too far away to make the meetings each month! Of course, we're happy for her, as this seems her dream job, but we will just miss her terribly. On the bright side, Jon brought along Vivian Walworth who has been working with 3D longer than the rest of us have been alive! As a member of the Polaroid Research Laboratories (19441985), she conducted research in 3-D imaging, color photography, photographic emulsions, spectral sensitization and instant photography... worked with Edwin Land! She brought with her some StereoJets as well as very rare color Vectographs, and informed us that the Rowland Institute is interested in reviving the StereoJet process materials production (currently I am the only one in the world still making StereoJets!). FOOD was our theme, since that's the subject of the NSA group show this year. Jon brought some amazing vintage family stereo slides from Roy Watson who grew up in Dorcester, MA. Took digital stereo headshots of everyone, and then our first group picture... already feeling notalgic!
March 15, 2007
Dan Gosch/Jan Burandt/Jim Ferguson/Ron Labbe, host
We had some non 3D guests, Michele's friends Jim Shea and Carla. It was noted that after last month's big meeting with NESOP folks we heard nothing from them...!? This month's theme was FAMILY snapshots, which included friends and anything else! Jan had a good size box of goodies from various travels, including a hot tub in Houston that really gave Jim Shea a 3D bang! Too bad he hadn't focussed his viewer (he figured that out eventually)! Big Jim had some family shots as well as studio stuff... great one of his friend Rick framed with a puppet. Dan brought along some family shots... including some fun beach shots (his baby daughter Greta eating sand!) I had a load of stuff, and most of it seemed to be my best model, Michele! We all sure have gone through some changes over the years~ After maybe an hour's worth of stereo pics, Carla announced that she was "saturated"! We still had plenty good stuff to see! Guess that happens when you allow flatlanders into the "Golden Circle"~
February 15, 2007
Dan Gosch/Jan Burandt/Jim Ferguson/Jon Golden/Ron Labbe, host with NESOP
Special guests from NESOP (New England School of Photography) came by to see what stereo is all about, and I believe they were quite amazed at the quality of modern viewers and views. Marty Hassel (dean), Bill Carruthers (president), Nick Johnson (gallery director) and Allison Geehan (business director) were overwhelmed with the new Chinese medium format rotary viewer as well as Ekeren rotaries that were filled with images by Jan, Jon and Ron. The Mirscope made quite an impression, as did the StereoJets and anaglyphs... (I'd just picked up the new Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition with the 3D section we shot in Maui and Miami... I was mostly very pleased, with the ads looking really good as well!). Also projected my "Pictures in Stereo" Powerpoint slide show about 3D, which went well. Finally we convened in the balcony where Dan blew them away with his killer stuff and Jim showed some really nice studio MF slides. Nick was just exhuberant, uttering comments like "does this (excitement about 3D) wear off?" and "Now I've got to go back and teach stupid 2D!". Luckily Nick is the gallery guy, and he definitely wants to show stereo! And he lives less than a mile from here! Jan passed around the new, hot off the press, Stereoscopy (with the cover we just last Third Thursday) as well as Hans Knuchel's new stereo book "Augentrost (Eyebright)" (lots of discussion on the stereoscopic shadow!). Looks like she'll be teaching a workshop on stereo at the school. Very exciting evening!

Dan Gosch/Jan Burandt/Jim Ferguson/Jon Golden/Ron Labbe, host
Good to have the gang back after the holiday hiatus! Lots of stuff to see, including John Hart's large print viewer- the MIRSCOPE. Also the horrendous Barnes and Noble publication "Art Masterpieces in 3D"... MotionArtsGroup did a horrible job with the conversions- sickening! Jan wanted to shoot a cover for STEREOSCOPY, so we gathered 'round the table top for her idea of hands passing off "favorite gear". In her mind it was simpler to realize than it turned out to be! Jim had some fun slides of Dan's Halloween party... Jan showed shots of the Berlin Holocaust Memorial. Jon had some very nice new images of dogs and bridges (surprise!) and announced that he may be teaching stereo photography at the New England School of Photography! Dan wowed us with yet another round of great images from his stereo heyday... hope that well doesn't run dry too soon! I didn't have a theme, but showed a load of David E. KLUTHO images, since we've just shot the newest Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition. Had only a few from the model shoot in Hawaii, and GMC ad shoot in Miami, but had a good number of originals and dupes from the original shoot (and "pre-shoot") of the 2000 edition. Late night!

Dan Gosch/Jan Burandt/Jim Ferguson/Jon Golden/Ron Labbe, host
Showed my first anaglyph "Phantogram", a balsa glider (birthday present for my college professor now 80!) and the published 3D issue of SI for KIDS. Dan had some nice 3D slides from his Halloween party which most of us attended... some great costumes! (Still waiting for Alfapha's, I mean Jim's shots!) I picked SWIMSUITS as the theme for vintage images, the reason for which I will divulge next month! There was some upgrading of images- more discussion than usual on grading criteria. Will need to have labels handy for grade changes! Got through a box of LADIES POSING as well...
October 19, 2006
Dan Gosch/Jan Burandt/Jim Ferguson/Ron Labbe, host First the gang saw the anaglyphs that had been freshly created for the Dec SPORTS ILLUSTRATED for KIDS issue... incredible stereography by David Klutho. I did the anaglyph conversions and little special effects for the issue- could even get a credit! We saw a very unusual Japanese 3D book that has a built-in "Wheatstone" (mirror) viewer with spiral bound pages on either side. Also looked at Barry Rothstein's phantogram book, which has some pretty effective standup anaglyphs. Upstairs I showed images from my MISC boxes... some regrading was suggested, mostly UP! Dan had some great stereos from his wife Roseannes's parents' wedding! And Jim brought some new images of his, including some of his best nude work.
September 21, 2006
Dan Gosch/Jan Burandt/Ron Labbe, host
Small group to see the Ron Labbe slides... are the others trying to tell me something? Firstly, Jan brought some posters and stories from the 2nd 3D Film Expo in Hollywood, CA. Some historic 3D there! And Jan brought me an awesome t-shirt! I'll have to start wearing black :) I showed a few boxes of "A" slides from RON LABBE boxes- seemed to be well received! Jan had seen a lot (put these together years ago when Nick Capasso was coming by) and Dan had seen only the very early ones. Also showed a set of images given to dignitaries of the inauguration of Dwight D. Eisenhower (with Richard Nixon as vice pres~!).
August 18, 2006
Dan Gosch/Jan Burandt/Jim Ferguson/Ron Labbe, host
The core group came by to see the collection of HANK CASPER slides which I recently scored from eBay. Some great stuff here, both girlie and regular including one of boxer Primo Carnera which Dan enjoyed. Ironically it was our old 3D friend, John Lovell, who did the scanning of all the slides for eBay! Jan brought a load of holography books, as she is interested in figuring out how the process actually works. It's all still a mystery... Dan shared some more of his slides, though he confessed he's running low! He did have some new work from his recent visit to San Miguel, Mexico. The bullfight or corpses didn't phase Jan, but a macro shot of a mouse made her scream, dropping the viewer!

Roger Richmond/Dan Gosch/Jan Burandt/Jon Golden/Jim Ferguson/Ron Labbe, host
with Nick Capasso (DeCordova Contemporary Art Museum curator), guest
Very exciting to have both Roger Richmond (and wife Beverly) join the the regular group along with a very important guest, NICK CAPASSO. Ron had shown Nick stereo slides of his work as far back as 1991 hoping to get an interest in 3D by a major art musuem. This was Nick's fourth (or fifth?) visit, but this time there were other stereo imagers to impress him. Roger amazed him with the world's best macro slide pairs of space in nature while Dan zapped him with his fantastic experimental 3D photos. Jon and Jan had images to see in rotary viewers, and Jim showed some female models as well as a kid shot or two. I showed Kesner, Smith and some vintage medium format views in the new floor stand rotary viewer from China I picked up in Miami... he also saw StereoJets for the first time, and some flower phantograms from Terry Wilson. We even finished with a projected program by Chris Schneberger that just won first prize at NSA 2006. On his way out, Nick gave the most promising news: he thinks stereo imaging can sell tickets (and that's the what they need to do)! However, there's still the problem of the head curator lacking stereopsis!

As this is the actual 21st wedding anniversary of myself and Michele, I had to go with WEDDINGS as the theme! I had lots of A list vintage photos, but I hadn't even thought of showing the photos by Paul WIng of my own wedding! Luckily I was able to put my hands on them relatively quickly... has been a while since we'd seen them and of course the guests hadn't. Unfortunately about half the shots has serious focus problems... shot with a Realist, I think (1985). Jan brought some wedding images she's shot recently with her RBT- too bad Paul hadn't had that! (Ironic that I "inherited" Paul's RBT S-1 camera!) Dan showed some "snapshots" that were, of course, amazing.

Some new items for "Show and Tell" included the amazing new "TOOL" cd with built-in stereoscope! Also the 1000th issue of "Rolling Stone" magazine has a full lenticular cover- varying opinions on the quality... The new Chinese medium format viewer was passed around with some images of models at a car show- pretty nice viewer for $50 on eBay from Dr T. We looked at more "A" slides from my collection from categories STORE, JOBS and INDOOR SHOW. Dan showed some of his 1980's Coney Island shots and the classic View-Master "Goofy- Traveling Cameraman" set. Jim had some misc shots, including family... Jan brought a set of hand-made View-Master reels by "Vladmir".

Dan Gosch/Jon Golden/Jan Burandt/Ron Labbe, host Jan handed out the new issue of ISU's STEREOSCOPY with the amazing Klutho sports images on the cover! Jon showed a new wood card viewer from Alan Lewis and some really nice travel slides (he gave me a fine one of a row of housewives on camels in front of the Sphinx!) I showed the choicest images from my collection of REALIST ORIGINALS, slides that Realist tried to sell to collectors in the 50's for $1.50! That's like ten bucks today! Somehow, they shot all original Kodachromes! All numbered and captioned, too (Permamounts and taped metal/glass!). We also saw some digital projection via the borrowed Optoma sxga+ projectors.

Our third Third Thursday! I had some good TOURIST ATTRACTION vintage slides to share, but was blown away by Jon Golden's collection of vintage scenes of India! Louis showed some images that I scanned for him, and Dan shared some of his great light drawing and other images. Jan scored 4 of his "water" images for reproduction in ISU "Stereoscopy".

Jim was chock full of images and stories! Family shots as well as his usual tasteful nudes (if you don't mind hardware in flesh!)... ask him about "JAZZBO"! Jon brought some great vintage slides from his collection as well as a "3DVR" toy from the swap shed that actually worked! A Space Invaders game, except it wasn't in 3D... My wife Michele (who grabbed a 3D viewer occassionally) loved the toy! I showed some A grade images from my PEOPLE and KIDS collection.

Dan Gosch/Jan Burandt/Jim Ferguson/Jay McCreery/Ron Labbe, host Our first meeting was great! We looked at a LIFE magazine article from September 1981 that showed stereo pairs (for mirror viewing), and several of Dan's images were featured (along with Steve Aubrey, David Starkman and Susan Pinsky). We established the idea of passing slides around, rather than viewers (since each person likes to tweak their own viewer). Jim showed some of his medium format slides (we did pass around his Saturn viewer), then we looked at "A" slides from my collection of FOREIGN TRAVEL. Some amazing stuff, a few needed upgrades for sure. Dan also shared some of his own slides, wonderful images that inspired me greatly 25 years ago. |
